Hi everyone! I wanted to introduce myself and share a picture of my baby boy. He was born early at 33 weeks, weighing just 3 pounds 3 ounces. We spent a month and a week in the NICU. Today he is 2 months old. He can lift his head and look around for a short time, and he has even rolled from his back to his stomach once. He has been diagnosed with Down syndrome. So far, there are no problems with his vision, eyes, heart, or stomach.
I honestly don’t know much about trisomy 21. At my first genetics visit, they only focused on the negatives, which scared me a lot. Can anyone share their own experiences? Can you tell me some positives, since I’ve only heard the hard parts so far? A few people have told me I should contact Social Security—does anyone have experience with that and can explain why it’s needed?
Liam also has a 13-year-old sister. Does anyone have advice on how to talk to her about Down syndrome? I’ve explained a little, but I’m not sure how well I’m doing, and I don’t want to scare her by only sharing the negatives like I was told. Thank you so much for your time.
