I recently had beef plate ribs (aka dino ribs) for the first time and there’s a reason some consider these the Cadillac of barbeque. So I would agree it’s some of the best meat out there.
That said, they cost me a pretty penny (about $45 for a single bone, albeit with a lot of meat), so far more than all other cuts of BBQ (ie brisket, pork ribs, etc). So there’s the economic factor. As for doing it yourself, I did a look up and even assuming you have the equipment, a rack like the above, you’re talking about a 10-hour smoke session on average, for admittedly not as much meat. Contrast that with a rack of pork ribs, which assuming you use the 3–2–1 method, goes about 6–7 hours, or a brisket, which can go 12–15 hours (with a ton more meat), and you’re talking about a lot of effort and time, along with the much higher cost for product.
I probably will make the effort at some point because no denying these were some really tasty bites of food, but it’d be for a very special occasion.
Edit: Wow…of all my answers/replies on Quora, my first 1K+ upvotes post ends up being a glorified beef vs pork discussion. People love their meat, I guess, especially when there’s no wrong answer. And yeah, I’ll eat either rib all day long, except my diet won’t let me.
