When cops drive slower than the speed limit, are they playing a game to see who will pass them? I see this a lot, and many people won’t pass, even though passing would still be within the speed limit.

A LOT of them are in Colorado. In fact, it happened to me. Speed limit is 75; trooper was going 72 and I passed him going exactly 75. He immediately pulled me over and lied to me by saying that he pulled me over for passing someone else unsafely (there was nobody else around and he would have had to have been looking in his rear view mirror over a quarter mile behind him). I informed him that I have a dashcam “to keep people honest on the road” and that I unplugged it just as he pulled me over so as to not make him nervous being recorded. He then looked around, pointed to it sitting in the center console and asked if that was the camera. He took my license and ran it, and he “let” me go on my way.

I HIGHLY suggest buying a cheap dashcam (one that has GPS to record the speed you’re going is preferable). It keeps *everyone* on the road honest, even law enforcement. If I didn’t point out my dashcam, I almost certainly would have gotten a ticket.

And I know this happens a lot in Colorado because people freeze up and won’t pass an officer even if the officer is going 10 to 20 miles per hour below the speed limit. I see it very often. All of a sudden traffic is going 60 in a 75 just because they won’t pass the officer.

Edit: I reviewed the dashcam video after I got home that day and I definitely did *not* unsafely pass anyone at any time on that commute.

Below is an image of the card he gave me. His rank is TRP and last name is Perez, employee number 6982. I’m not posting his info here because I necessarily think he’s corrupt (maybe he was just having a bad day) but posting to hopefully help keep these people honest.

Seriously, spend fifty bucks on a cam and protect yourself.
